Caterpillars on the move

Today the caterpillars were on the move. They were booking along the pathway. One after another racing along…until I came to the ones that were still. So maybe that’s why they were moving so fast. Maybe they need to go fast enough so they don’t curl up and stay forever on the path. They need to make it to the greenery to eat and eat and eat and eventually undergo metamorphosis.

I followed the blacktop path through trees. It took a turn and then it stopped. The trail was only grass and clover. It invited me to take off my sandals and wander barefoot for a bit, and I obliged. I walked through the grass and clover enjoying the feel of lush blades beneath my toes. I watched for prickly weeds and bumble bees, hoping they wouldn’t sting me. It was worth the risk — my feet were so happy.

It reminded me of childhood days. My thoughts floated to the changes in my days — three of four children have already flown the coop. The last one graduates high school in May. There it is—my homeschool days will soon be done. If I was so inclined, I could count the days — but I’m not. I’m not in a rush unlike the caterpillars . Maybe I should be? Maybe I need to get to the greenery on the other side and undergo a metamorphosis of sorts. New days are coming soon enough — but they’re not here yet, so for now let me walk with sandals in my hand and enjoy the sun.
